Chicago Now Home to Nation’s Largest LEED Gold Apartment Complex

The two-towered Alta at K Station, the product of a collaboration between Chicago-based Fifield Companies and its joint-venture partner, Pacific Life Insurance Co. of Newport Beach, CA, recently attained LEED Gold from the USGBC. The complex of 848 luxury residences is the largest apartment building in the country to have earned that level of sustainability.

A variety of green construction practices helped the residential building, located at 555 W. Kinzie Street, to hit LEED Gold. Recycling building materials, reduced energy consumption, maximized the natural light in each unit and an advanced standard for the indoor air quality all lead to a greener building.

“As Chicago is one of the greenest cities in the country, it’s fitting that we chose our hometown to develop the largest Gold LEED apartment complex,” said Steven Fifield, president and founder of Fifield Companies. “We wanted to challenge ourselves to show the public that a luxury apartment building can also be eco-friendly, especially on such a large scale as Alta at K Station.”

The site also features multiple green roofs and landscaping that requires minimal water. Residents have access to a one-acre park, with its terraced green space, walking paths, large playground and other amenities.

“Based on the positive response we’ve had to Alta, we’re pledging that every apartment building we develop going forward will be LEED certified,” said Fifield. He also said that, while not all of their project going forward will be as ambitious by going for LEED Gold, “the benefits of a green building are too numerous to ignore—from both a business perspective and the environment.”
