Building Green Chicago 2014

250x250_BGC-logo_Square [1]The 8th annual Building Green Chicago Conference & Expo [1]has been scheduled for April 29th, 2014. In addition to a showroom floor featuring the latest in green building products and services, attendees will be able to listen in on education panels covering some of the latest trends in sustainable construction. The keynote address will be delivered by Cook County Chief Sustainability Officer, Deborah Stone.

One focus this year will be on Chicago’s new energy benchmarking standards. A new Chicago ordinance requires large buildings to track and report their energy use—data that the City will make available so that various properties can be publicly compared and contrasted. Approximately 3,500 buildings will be affected by the new legislation. Is yours one of them? Attendees to this panel will hear what the criteria are, how to track and report their energy use and what steps they can take to reduce their energy footprint and stand out in the Chicago marketplace.

Another panel will apply design thinking to a building’s waste infrastructure. Session participants would learn how to conduct a waste audit (and why every building should do one), and then learn how to redesign their operations according to user experience. This is very useful for scoring LEED points and increasing building recycling rates.

As more developers and consumers in this country accept sustainable architecture, the search is always on for the next superlative in green building. Currently, the passive house standard truly is the greenest option for new construction. Find out what methods go into this unique construction method and how you can take advantage of them to make your next project energy independent.
