Climate Action March Coming Through Chicago

Chicago Climate March PosterOn March 1, 2014, hundreds of everyday Americans set out from Los Angeles, CA, on a 3,000-mile walk to Washington, DC. The goal of the Great March for Climate Action, according to the organization’s mision statement, is to “change the heart and mind of the American people, our elected leaders and people across the world to act now to address the climate crisis.”

This Saturday, September 6th, the march will arrive in suburban Oak Park. The 12-mile walk from Oak Park to Daley Plaza has been dubbed the “Chicago Climate March.” Organizers are calling on Chicago-area residents to join the march.

A day of events is planned, culminating in an afternoon rally at Daley Plaza. The first opportunity to join the marchers is at Oak Park Public Library Plaza next to Scoville Park. The second gathering and rally will occur at the Garfield Park Conservatory. The marchers will assemble at Buckingham Fountain before proceeding through Grant Park and Millennium Park towards Daley Plaza.

Speakers will include Kimberly Wasserman from the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization, Jack Darin from the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club, Abigail Derby-Lewis from the Field Museum and Chicago Wilderness Climate Initiative, Mike Nowak from the Chicago Recycling Coalition and others.
