Chicago Rises in Ranking of Green Office Space

Chicago has moved up in a ranking of the nation’s largest metropolises on a recent survey of sustainable office space. According to the 2016 Green Building Adoption Index, over 72% of the Chicago market’s qualified commercial space is certified green, up from 63% last year. And with nearly one-fifth of all commercial buildings in the area certified, Chicago comes in at second on the list of the nation’s 30 largest markets, right behind San Francisco.

Chicago Third in Nation for Green Building Adoption

CBREChicago has retained its ranking among the nation’s largest metropolises on a recent survey of sustainable office space. With 63.4% of its office space certified green, Chicago came in third, behind Minneapolis and San Francisco. As Chicago is significantly larger than these two other cities combined, this market has clearly embraced green real estate practices like no other.

Filling in the Gaps at 515 North State

Double Down: Two Riverfront Buildings Invest in Sustainability

The two buildings at 10 and 120 South Riverside Plaza sit beside the south branch of the Chicago River, near more traditionally attractive, art deco structures like 2 North Riverside Plaza and the Civic Opera House. These two Miesian boxes aren’t necessarily homely in comparison so much as emblematic of their era. Designed by Skidmore Owings and Merrill and erected in 1965 and 1967, they exhibit the steel and glass aesthetic of mid-century modernism.

The Loop’s Latest Green Residential Building is No Square

Located at 210 N Wells, 2002 is the city’s latest marquee residential high-rise and one of the only major high-rises constructed in the central business district last year. To help it stand out, Solomon Cordwell Buenz designed the 42-story, 329-unit rental building with sustainability in mind.

Chicago Among Top Five Greenest U.S. Cities

Continuing a national appraisal begun last year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ranked the top U.S. cities in terms of efficient buildings. Chicago moved to fifth overall, up one spot from the previous year. The ranking is based on number of building which garnered the EPA’s Energy Star rating, of which Chicago has 134.
