Chicago Slips to Third Among LEED-Certified Cities

After three straight years at the top, Illinois has fallen to third on an annual ranking of green building projects in the U.S. The per capita list was compiled by the USGBC using U.S. Census data and commercial and institutional green building projects that were LEED-certified throughout 2016. Illinois totaled 151 LEED certifications last year, representing 2.82 square feet of certified space per resident.

In the Great Lakes region, Illinois comes in second in the unenviable race for which state can generate the most garbage. The problem is exacerbated in Cook County, which falls well below national averages in both waste mitigation and rate of recycling. For environmental and financial reasons, these problems must be addressed.

For the third straight year, Illinois tops the annual ranking of green building projects in the U.S. The per capita list was compiled by the USGBC using U.S. Census data and commercial and institutional green building projects that were LEED-certified throughout 2015. Illinois retained its top national position with 161 LEED certifications last year, representing 3.43 square feet of certified space per resident.

Illinois is Tops in Nation for Green Building Per Capita

In its annual ranking of green building among U.S. states, the USGBC has anointed Illinois the leader for the second year in a row. The per-capita list is compiled using U.S. Census data and commercial and institutional green building projects that were LEED-certified throughout 2014. Illinois retained its top national position with 174 LEED certifications last year, representing 3.31 square feet of certified space per resident.

Illinois Among the Top for New Green Space in 2011

A new ranking of US states by green buildings finds Illinois in the top ten. The USGBC’s list ranked states for LEED-certified commercial and institutional green buildings per capita. The District of Columbia lead the nation, with more than 31 square feet of LEED-certified space per person last year.

Quinn to ComEd: Smart Grid Deal Needs Some Work

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn quashed any hope of support that Commonwealth Edison had for its proposal to construct a smart electric grid. According to a Chicago Tribune report, Quinn argues that, in its current form, the deal would allow ComEd and other utilities to hike rates without state approval.

Chicago has more than eighty-eight LEED-certified buildings, thirty-two of which are city-owned, making Chicago top in the nation in LEED-certified municipal buildings. In addition to that, Chicago is among the top in the nation in green roofs with 600 planned, under-construction or completed, totaling approximately eight million square feet. By all appearances, city officials seem to understand the benefits of environmentally-sound buildings and will continue to promote green building.
